Why do people dock tails on a dog?

I do not understand why people feel a need to do this.

Many dogs with docked tails are working dogs, such as hunting dogs. Their tails are docked so that they dont become injured when the dog is working.

Historically, tail docking was performed on certain working and hunting dogs to prevent injury in the field. Herding dogs and some working dogs with bushy tails had their tails docked for sanitary reasons - prevent the tails from collecting feces and dirt. It seems that the practice for certain breeds has been carried on as a matter of aesthetics or tradition.

This is done on hunting dogs so that the tail won't get caught up on the bushes or grasses and scare away the prey.
