You can purchase a plastic cone that attaches to your dog's collar that will not allow your dog to access it's tail. I have also heard that you can dip the dog's tail into something sour like lemon juice to deter it from wanting to chew. If the problem continues see a vet.

If your dog is chewing his tail, then there is probably something wrong where he needs to go to the veterinarian. The dog may have fleas, a tick, ringworm, a hot spot, or some other type of skin condition. Make sure to clean the area and apply an antibacterial solution.
