I like to press white shredded coconut all over my cakes while the icing is still soft, then draw 2 eyes on it so it looks like a "creature."

Try using unusual colors instead of using normal colors try mixing them together to make your own colors. Or you can look around your kitchen for some other shapes and utensils to use. Using a fork's tongs will give you interesting lines. Placing cookie cutters on the cake and piping your frosting into it will leave you with that shape.
