Refractometers come in various sizes and use different principles to do the calculations and show the refractory Index. The basic ones are simple and quite inexpensive. There are 4 types - handheld traditional refractometers, handheld digital refractometers, laboratory / Abbe refractometers, and inline process refractometers.

The handheld digital ones are a breeze to use - they give out readings very quickly and are used by wine makers, etc to calculate the amount of sugar or salt in water etc. Quite nifty!  add a comment

It works like a prism - the glass thingy that separates out ordinary light into rainbow colors. Same principle in the refractometer, except that it gives out readings indicating the Refractory Index of the material being tested.

A refractometer measures the Refractive Index RI) of any object that allows light transmission. RI refers to the ratio of change of speed of light when it travels insight the object to the speed of light in vacuum. The higher the RI the less the light speed in the object.

They actually use a concept called Gladstone-Dale relation to calculate this RI - a pretty complicated series of mathematical formula and theories!  add a comment
