The apprehension of death among westerners varies greatly. To some extent it depends on their religious faith, or their perception of an afterlife. In general, yes, westerners do have a great fear of death.

Some Westerners fear death; others do not. For example, works of or about prominent atheists typically make a point that there is nothing to fear. On the other hand, there is a tradition in Western fiction of villains motivated by the desire for immortality, which may account for the perception that fear of death is particularly characteristic of the West.

Many westerners (if you mean cowboy area westerners) probably do have a fear of death from being raided by cowboys, whereas cowboys do not.
