The quadriceps, the large muscles at the front of the thighs, do all the work when climbing stairs. You might consider doing some regular exercises to strengthen those muscles.

You probably have a lot of pain in your thighs after exercising because your muscles are being stretched. Try taking the stairs more often and it should get easier for you.

If you aren't used to climbing stairs, you could simply be using muscles you don't often use. Or you could have hip joint issues. Ask your doctor.

Muscle strain is the most common cause, but it could be due to something else. It's best to check with a doctor.
