Albert Einstein first proved the theoretical existence of the laser on paper, but had no actual system for creating it. A number of other scientists managed to create designs for certain functions of the laser device. The first working laser was shown by Theodore Maiman in 1960, but only emitted short pulses.

Theodore Maiman was the first person to construct a working laser. His work was preceded by Townes and Schawlow who invented the first maser.
