I'm lasering plastic badges on a laser machine equipped with a vacuum system. The fumes are still quite strong.

It's not the laser causing the fumes, it's the heat that's causing the burning of the plastic. And yes, use common sense. Burning plastic has many carcinogens (cancer causing materials).

Those fumes are actually melting plastic, so long-term exposure to them can cause lung irritation, or pleuritis, among with other respiratory issues.
