Sprite was invented in 1961 by the Coca Cola company as a direct competitor to 7up. The drink formula itself was invented in Germany a short time before, and was called "Fanta Klare Zitrone" or "Clear Lemon Fanta." It was not invented by a pharmacist.

It was invented in 1961. It was invented by the Coca-Cola company as a response to 7-Up being so popular. It was marketed as a sophisticated drink that could be used to mix with alcoholic beverages. There have been 12 different varieties of Sprite introduced. Some of them have been discontinued.
