It could be caused by a condition knowns as restless leg syndrome that can cause pain or over-active muscles in the legs and knees at nighttime. There are now medications for treating it such as tramadol or other sleep-aids and it can also be treated with slight exercise right before bedtime.

It sounds like that you have restless leg syndrome. My parents have had this and apparently its living hell. There are several medications for this and i recommend that you take a look at them.

sometimes when there is no sun present, your body lacks vitamin d from the suns rays. also, differenc in temperature can cause stiffness in the body. the colder it is, the more likely you are to feel pain. people tend to slow down at night. the inability of movement causes muscle to stiffen.
