Pain behind the knee can be caused by direct injuries to that area or surrounding tissues. However, if you have hurt any other part of your leg it could be putting more stress and strain in this area.

Could be something as simple as a strained muscle to softening of the cartilage behind the kneecap. Does ice or heat help?

This can be caused by a variety of reasons. If you are older, you may have arthritis. If you are more active, you may have torn cartilage in your knee. Try icing your knee. Go to your doctor for an examination. Try buying a knee brace for support.

In most cases, arthritis is the major cause to the situation but at times common cold, depression and fever could be the cause.
