First take an inventory of what you are putting on the shelves. For larger items: like hatboxes, stacked shoeboxes or comforters use 18" shelving. For smaller items: purses, photo albums, or linens use 12" shelving. Depending on height can even install a 12" shelf over another 12" or 18" shelf.

Closet shelves I think should be 8" wide and 16" deep. That will give you space to store small and larger things.
