Sizes of softballs very based on the leagues they are used. There are 10, 12 and 16 inch balls used in different leagues and promote different play. More athletic people use a smaller ball which flies further and will have more velocity. A bigger ball doesn't fly off the bat as far and is easier to catch, typically for picnics.

In international play the size of the softball is 12" in circumference and weighs between six and seven ounces. In fast pitch softball the size of the softball is 12" but in slow pitch softball 11" or 12" The 11" ball weighs between 5 7/8 oz and 6 1/ 8oz.

Fast pitch soft balls are 12" in diameter for better grip but the slow pitch soft balls are usually a little smaller. They tend to be 11" inches because it is slow pitch but they may get as small as 10" for youth leagues.
