Question by  Chris41 (152)

What should I do about my dog who has been diagnosed with spleen cancer?

Is it painful? How long will he live? Should I put him through treatments?

Your dog can live without a spleen but your dog might not be able to produce white blood cells since the spleen is needed to produce them. Try to find out if it is white pulp or red pulp that caused the cancer. And do surgery if you can afford .

Well it will be painful. You can put him through treatments depending on his age. If he is old then let it be.

This is a determination that should be made by your veterinarian. A few factors that will affect the decision is the age, the weight, and the breed of the dog.

The best thing for you to do would be to spend as much time as you can with the animal. When the time comes you also may want to think about putting the animal down, in order to stop suffering.

Can it be removed? Cancer treatment in dogs is often very successful and if you have the money you should try it. Is the dog of an advanced age? In ok health? These questions might help you decide what to do. It's a tough road to treat this. I am sorry.

Typically, a veterinarian would remove the spleen. If not removed it could rupture and cause internal bleeding, which could lead to death. It can be painful for the dog. Another issue is often the cancer spreads to other areas. Chemotherapy is also an option for dogs with cancer. Life span depends on the seriousness of the cancer.

His prognosis depends on a lot of different factors. One is how advanced the cancer is. If it isn't very advanced there is a lot more hope of success in treatment. Another huge factor is the age of your dog. If he is an older dog it might not be worth it to put him through treatment.

I am sorry to hear of your ill news. I had a dog that had cancer himself. I know for a fact that when a dog has cancer, it doesn't feel well. My dog used to look forward to getting his treatments because then he felt better. But the problem is that it is costly to get the treatments.

A lot of it depends on your dog's prognosis and his age. You have to weigh quality of life with treatment.

The answers to all those questions depend on the dog and how much you want to put him through. The biggest factor of if you should put him through treatment is his age and prognosis. If he's young it may be worth it to try and treat him, but if he's old you may just want to make him comfortable.

It is a very difficult decision to make but talk to your vet they can ask your questions much better than anyone on here.
