The first thing to do is to make sure you have a proper chimney cap to ensure that the water does not run down the flue. If the leak persists in spite of a proper cap then your fireplace venting has a more serious problem which needs urgent attention.

Never use a fireplace that has a water leaking problem. You will end up messing the whole fireplace and chimney and will lead to extremely expensive repairs. Look for water stains and salt stains (Efflorescence) indicate early water problems and you should never ignore these signs.  add a comment

If it's condensation water, seasonal changes in humidity and temperature can cause this. You really can't control that, eh!

Where is the water coming into the fireplace venting from? Check for cracks or holes in the crown or elsewhere will need to be sealed properly. If water is just soaking in through the porous material a proper water repellent treatment will be needed.

Remember - water soaks in only when it pools somewhere - so never allow this to happen close to your chimney or on the roof.  add a comment
