What is the best way to stretch into splits?

I want to stretch safely and not injure myself.

The one thing to remember about stretching for splits is to do stretches for all three splits and take your time, don't rush. First do a lunge with your hands on the floor and knee bent. Next straighten your knee and put your nose to knee. Next you can finally go into your split.

Warmup your muscles involved in performing a split (groin, hamstrings), and preferably do some light jogging. Perform split as far as your legs can bring and gradually increase the extent.

Start Slowly! I assume you want to do the splits with both legs out to the side, Just start by sitting on your bottom and stretching you legs as far apart as they go increase the distance gradually until you are in a full split position, it will take time!

Well first you should aim to lock your knees and bend over to touch the sides of your feet. Then you can aim to spread your legs wider and wider. This technique is used in bikram yoga and it is most effective. It helps stretch safely and effectively with all muscle groups being worked.
