Onycha oil is a natural substance that comes from Benzoin trees found in Sumatra, Java and Malaysia. It has to be extracted with a solvent and can then be purified to remove the solvent. There is a second school of thinking that says the bible is referring to a snail like mollusk that grows in the red sea.

Shecheleth (incorrectly called "onycha") was actually a plant exudation from the Rock Rose bush called "labdanum." Some believe the Rock Rose bush was the "Rose of Sharon." Labdanum was used with myrrh and was one of the ancient incense ingredients used by ancient egypt and Israel. Onycha is Labdanum.

Onycha was one of the ingredients used in the Holy Incense in the Bible in Exodus 30:34-36. The original word for this ingredient was "shecheleth." When the Bible was translated to Greek, "shecheleth" was translated as "onycha." So the real word was "shecheleth" and NOT "onycha."

Styrax Benzoin is a tropical tree that produces a resin. Onchya oil is extracted from the resin by use of solvents, which are then in turn removed to make this vanilla scented, thick, aromatic oil. It is used in wound healing either in the thick form or formulated into a tincture to be applied to wounds or infections.
