Nonjudicial Punishment (NJP), Article 15, is a process that allows a commanding officer to investigate, hear and punish certain minor offenses. The NJP might be used to punish an individual for crimes already heard in a civilian or foreign court. The charge heard at an NJP may subsequently be heard at a full Court-Marshall. Punishments are punitive in nature.

An Article 15 is not "minor" with regard to one's military career. LORs and LOAs are disciplinary letters that are less serious. Article 15 is for serious matters and will impede desirable assignments as well as promotions, possibly for the remainder of the service.

For the Army and Air Force, Article 15 refers to non-judicial punishments for minor offenses. They are imposed by a commanding officer or officer in charge. Determination of whether the offense qualifies as "minor" is up to the commanding officer.
