A video/audio sender does exactly what the name says it does it can send video and audio to and from a PC to a TV or backwards. Moat do it wireless but you can find some that use wires that are still sold on the market place today like the sling box.

It sounds like you are talking about a type of audio video receiveer. If the product has an input on it bsically what it does is receive a signal and could split it to lets say,send the video to a tv,and the audio to surround sound speakers. all it does is send audio to one place and video to another.
