However difficult it may be, try to treat the rude customer as normal as possible. Stay balanced and don't give the customer a reason to escalate things.

If You're only an employee in the company then you need to call You'r supervisor (if you take all other neccessary polite steps) and from the time you do that, the customer is not of You'r business and daily obligations. However if you are the supervisor/manager then You'r company must have some codex of customer-service?

A polite way to handle a customer would be to treat that customer with respect and dignity. Try to find out whats making them mad and try to solve thier problem.
