You begin by listening to everything the customer has to say. Do not interrupt at any point. Afterward you give a short synopsis of what you think the problem is that they are having. Next suggest 3 ways the problem could be resolved. If they are not right, give three reasons why and back them up with proof.

I work customer service for a large bank and I have to deal with irate customers every day. Even if they are clearly in the wrong try not to dwell on that. Find a common ground where you can both negogiate a beneficial solution for both of you.

There are times when customers are so irate that they need to be dealt with firmly by customers. Sometimes you just have to tell them "no".

To handle an irate customer first determine what the problem is, what made them mad. Next, figure out what you can do for them - give them a discount or some special offer. Even if they are not right you want them to return so try to work with them.
