What could cause a swollen eye in a chicken?

There is a certain type of worm that can live in that area of the chicken causing a swollen eye. The chicken gets this worm from eating certain bugs in your yard. We had this happen and a vet had to literally squueze the worms out of the eye area.

Swollen eyes in chicken are most common decease and it is because of deficiency of Vitamin A. It is not a serious decease, if there is no injury in eyes. Specific eye ointments are available for swollen eyes. But you have to flush out before using these ointments. And you can give liquid medicines containing Vitamin A.

Eye irritants can cause swelling. If this occurs try rinsing the eye with saline solution you can purchase at a store.
