Excessive back strain, such as lifting heavy items or not using the proper stances when carrying them. A way to avoid this is to never overburden yourself and keep a straight back.It is more prevalent as you get older.

A hernia is caused by contents of the abdominal cavity(intestine or the tissue that holds the intestines) protruding through a weakness in the abdominal wall. This weakness can be due to improper formation from birth or from a surgical incision that did not heal properly. Lifting heavy objects can increase abdominal pressure and increase the chance of herniation.

Lifting too much weight. Once you get one you are more likely to get another. Very rarely they care caused by people doing dumb things after abdominal surgery. A hernia is also fixed by surgery. Other than that not a whole lot is known about hernias. I know they can be very painful.
