Pugs are great with kids. They don't get snappy or nervous like many other toy breeds, which make them ideal to have around children. Shih-Tzus are another great choice. They are enthusiastic and make wonderful companions.

The best choice is a Beagle. All of the Top 10 Dog's for Kid's lists rank them high up. They really only loose hair in the Spring and don't require you to brush them daily or bathe them weekly. Collie's are great too. They are intelligent and are rather patient. Make sure your dog has plenty of room to run.

Toy poodles are very populer in America. Most toy poodles have little shedding with a very low activity level so they are low maintence. Toy poodle are good with children of any age and strangers, a good pet for apartemnt life and the best option for a family with children.

Generally pit bulls are excellent with kids and fairly low maintenance. You need to make sure to properly socialize them and to train them, but they are awesome dogs, especially when raised in a loving home. They usually don't weigh more than 55-60 pounds and are fairly short, just muscular.
