Golden retriever. They are gentle, smart, well-mannered, and loving. Plus, they won't crap on your carpet. :)

The top two are probably Labradors and Golden Retrievers. The top five in most articles on the best dogs for children are Beagles, Pugs and Poodles. Generally small toy dogs tend to get nippy and are impatient with small children so try to stay away from those when choosing.

Boxers make wonderful family dogs. Others would include Staffordshire Bull Terrier, or most bully breeds, pug, Labrador, Newfoundland, basset hound, beagle. Be sure to include the whole family in the dogs training and never leave children unattended with any dog.

It depends on the size of dog you want. Labrador Retrievers are known for being lovable family dogs that are great around children. They are perfect if you want a larger dog. German Shepherds are also great dogs to have around children. If you're looking for a smaller dog, try a Miniature Schnauzer or a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Both are small to medium size dogs and are excellent for kids.

For a young family I would suggest a Pug. The are of excellent temperament,affectionate, loyal and energetic which is just perfect for children. They do not need a large yard and do well inside apartments.

Personally, I would choose a medium-sized dog with a good temperament, like a Bulldog or maybe even a Poodle. Just the right size so that it won't be knocking over your little ones, but sturdy enough to be able to withstand some mishandling without injury.

Labs (of any color) have a wonderful disposition as do Collies and Golden Retrievers. Collies make wonderful babysitters and are very intuitive, and have a wonderful, playful nature.
