What are some good ideas for conversation starters when hanging out with new friends?

I am pretty shy so I am aware of my hits and misses. I think talking about popular t.v. shows works really well, such as American Idol or Lost. Another topic would be local restaurants... who doesn't enjoy eating out? Especially in this economy, people appreciate recommendations so they do not waste time or money.

Talk about things you like to do or places you enjoy going. Once you find something in common and the conversation will just go from there.

Ask your new friends open ended questions about their hobbies to get the conversation flowing. This will also help you find other things you have in common.
