The real connection between all of you is books. So you could not go wrong with a gift certificate from a local bookstore, accompanied by a nice card. It would surely please any reader and is totally appropriate.

Since your secret friend is in your book club then the following items would make wonderful gifts. Book light, bookcover with handles for taking a book on the road, gift card to a bookstore, a beautifully bound book journal, a purchased biography of their favorite author. Pair any of these up with a lovely bookmark and you are done!

Since it's for a book club friend, maybe a reading journal or a new book would be nice. Also, you could give your friend some tea in a mug with a bookmark.
