You could try games such as 20 Questions, where you must decipher a chosen item or concept with 20 Yes/No questions or less. Alternatively, try playing chess by giving grid references as text, or give your opponent an item, which they must then draw using only symbols from the keyboard.

Depending on the IM you are using there is usually a tab that has games in it. Often times you can play chess, checkers, and tic tac toe. There are always more just depending on the site that is linked with the messenger.

Any text-based, question, or trivia game would work. Think hangman, twenty questions, or Trivial Pursuit. Some IM clients have built-in games of various sorts as well.

My personal favorite on AIM is the family feud or other board game series such as trivial pursuits. There is all sorts of games you can choose from. You can also play chess.

Almost any multi-person game that is available on Yahoo Games can be played over Yahoo Messenger. Simply log into Messenger, then into Yahoo Games and choose "start game."

I suppose you could do a truth or dare game via IM, although dares might be a little difficult to execute. Beyond that, MSN messenger lets you play Checkers, Chess, Connect 4, and a whole pile of other games. As far as homemade games, you'll have to use your imagination.

Best game by far is Battleship! I got the idea from Military Pilots in Iraq that had to do Recon missions and were super bored so they played Battleship with each other over the radios.
