Overgrowth is one of the primary concern with planting bamboo. Bamboo is a grass that grows quickly, is strong enough to break pavement, and spreads indiscriminately.
The growing problem you may find with bamboo is bamboo mites or mealy bugs. The real problem with bamboo is that it WILL take over and get out of hand.
The bamboo plant can take over an area if you plant it outside in the yard. If you a good size space to give the plant then everything should be alright. However, if you have a limited space I would look into another plant to place outside in the yard.
Bamboo is very hardy, but if the root system dries out, the plant will die. Also, as household bamboo is usually kept in water, they are prone rot from dead plant matter sitting in the water.
