Bakelite is an early plastic that was made with a thermosetting process. It was used in the 1920's and 1930's for a variety of things including jewelry, clocks, kitchenware and game pieces. Checkers made of Bakelite are heavier and more durable than current plastic checkers. They have a fine polisth and a distinctive sound to them.

Bakelite is a very early form of plastic. It was one of the first synthetic plastics. Lots of very old toys and other items are made from it.
