Is painting indoor outdoor carpet a good idea?

I think this is a terrible idea. You don't know what reaction the fiber might have with the paint. After it dries it'll be clumpy, stiff, and uncomfortable to walk on, especially barefoot. A good professional cleaning might make it look so much better you won't have to paint it.

It is not a good idea to try to paint indooor/outdoor carpet. The paint will most likely not adhere well and will flake and and rub off with foot traffic. If you attempt to paint the carpet, then use porch and floor enamel which might offer some abrasion resistance. It is best to just replace worn carpet.

You can paint the carpet unless you plan on walking on it. Paint and carpet do not mix well. The carpet fibers being flexible will allow the paint to flake off. You can however Dye carpet.

indoor / outdoor carpet is polypropylene, there is no paint, that can be bought at Wal-Mart, that will stick to it. You will have a monumental mess after the first rain, travel, or excurstion on the new paint job. If the carpet is just faded from the sun, try Armor-All
