Is mastitis more common while weaning?

Yes, it is. This is due to the decrease of milk production and milk flow making it easier for bacteria to move in, as well as bacteria from the mouth of a child on solids being able to infect the mother.

While mastitis is more common during the first month of breast feeding it can occur at anytime. Although is is less likely while weaning it can result if you have an infant that is especially difficult to wean,hence causing your breast to produce milk for a longer period of time.

Mastitis is something that can occur at any time while you are producing milk and breastfeeding, not just when you're trying to wean your child.

Any time you reducing the amount of milk you are expressing, you are at risk for developing mastitis. Your breasts will feel engorged and sore at first. This is completely normal and gradually reducing the milk you are expressing will help some with this problem. You should see a physician if your breasts are really painful.
