What is the process for weaning someone off of the ventilator?

My mother has been on a ventilator for two weeks now, the doctors informed me today that we will begin to wean her off soon and I would like to make sure it is time for her to do this.

Basically they go from a force air system to a passive air system. Then longer and longer periods off the ventilator all together to strenghten the lung muscles again.

Weaning off the ventilator is a process of using the ventilator less and less so the patient can come off the vent permanently. The sooner she is off the ventilator the better because if she becomes dependant on it she may never come off it. It is a good thing doing this sooner than later.

Physicians make the decision to start weaning someone off the ventilator when the underlying process that caused intubation and ventilating is controlled and the patient is stable. Most facilities have a process to wean the patient so communication with the physician is vital. Staff will explain the process to family.
