It is safer for an American to travel in Guatemala on vacation than for business purposes. Guatemala is ranked among the top ten nations where the kidnapping industry is at an all time high. I would suggest that you stick to resort areas and not go anywhere by yourself, even with a local guide. STAY with a group!

Having lived in Central America for many years I would say yes it is safe for an American to travel there. That said, travel in Guatemala is much like anywhere else in the world including the USA, most places are perfectly safe but there are some areas which you should avoid especially at night.
