The best way to protect yourself is by doing your research and knowing everything you need to about each place you go. Learn where you are 'allowed', have a tour guide available, and learn the basics of the native language(how to ask for the bathroom). Dress smart and appropriate for the country, have proper identification always, and don't travel alone.
