Division I is a launching pad for the pros; competition is stiff. Note how much is made of the rare player that does well academically; it's not common and it's not necessary. In Div 2 & 3, you'll find more players who are interested in academics.

It depends on the school, I am an average player but smart and I tried playing Division 1 at USF as a walk-on and it didn't work out but I transferred to D2 WIU and that's working out just fine for me!

I dont think so, To play college football you need to be an above average player. Thats why athlets move up and on to college ball, its because they have the ability to do so. If this were true, then that means any high school athlete with decent ability that is smart enough to get into college could play.

It depends on the skill level or if the athlete has any special gifts like being able to kick field goals. Most average players will typically get a chance to play some kind of college ball just because they have the grades to play.

Depending on your college's division, you might make it onto a college team. However, Division I colleges are very selective and may not take an average player.

Judging by the football players at my school... no. In fact, most of the athletes at U of A seem to prove the exact opposite! I sat next to Jordan Hill (who now plays for the New York Nix) in my very first class my freshmen year and he just slept and left his tests blank!
