These termites live true to their name and are found in dry wood above ground level. They do not need a water source and are harder to locate than the subterranean termites. Warmer climates are their favorites, but they can be transported. They eat the inside of wood articles before noticed, at times. Professional help is recommended.

Because they cut across the grain of the wood, instead of with the grain, they can be extremely destructive. They are larger than subterranean termites and therefore eat more, however their colonies tend to be smaller than the subterranean types. Any situation regarding termites requires immediate action as they can destroy an entire home in just a few months.

Less common than subterranean termites, these termites don't need moisture content in the wood they consume. Drywood termites eat wooden objects inside your home, leaving a hollow shell. They leave small holes in drywall and wallpaper, and construct mud tubes from the wood they digest.

Drywood termites are usually inside the wood doing their damage. Because of this they are hard to detect during routine pest and dry-rot inspections. The damage is done as colonies grow. These termites tend to to progress more slowly than damage from subterranean termites. When the damage is discovered, it is considerable because they are so hard to detect.
