Do permanents damage your hair?

It seems like it would dry it out.

Permanent waves break down the chemical compound of the hair shaft and then reform it around the rod during the neutralization process. Although permanent waves have greatly progressed over the years they still are damaging to some degree because of the breakdown of the hair.

Everything damages your hair. Hairspray, color and even pollution outside cause hair to react with chemicals. Permanents are not any bad or any worse if done by a professional.

Permanents can damage hair, so it is essential to select a perm solution that is best suited for your hair type. Fine, thin hair can be especially at risk. Follow the directions closely if you are using a home perm. As with any chemical processes used on your hair, it is best to leave such a job to a professional.
