This can be taken as a minor specialization with a bachelors' of mechanical engineering at several colleges. It can also be taken as a master's degree for mechanical engineering at many colleges.

Given the field, a minimum of a Bachelor's degree would be required. A graduate degree in physics or an engineering field would make the candidate more competitive. For example, an undergrad degree in mathematics coupled with a graduate degree in chemical engineering would require six to seven years of schooling.
