How long after you eat something does it show up in the breast milk?

I want to try to monitor how my diet affects the baby.

Eating a healthfully is very important to a nursing mother. Some foods can enter the "breast milk food supply" in as little as 12 hours; alcohol can take 1 hour!

I have found that it does not take too long for your food to enter the milk. If I ate broccoli for dinner, my son would be gassy that night. Likewise, it doesn't take long for things to leave the milk. For example, alcohol leaves the milk as it would leave your blood.

As with digestion of food after eating, which normally takes about 4 hours, so does breastmilk absorption with acids, fats, vitamins, and nutrients from the foods you eat.

I'm not really sure, but I think it is fairly quickly - as in the 20-30 minute range. It is pretty difficult to monitor how your diet affects your baby in this manner, though. For example, if you are trying to see if dairy isn't good - eat dairy for a few days, then none at all to see difference.
