How does a ripsaw work?

A rip saw cuts along the length of a board (i.e. make 2 1X4s from 1 1X8). It works on all wood, leaving a coarse cut.

The term ripsaw is actually a generic description for any saw that is designed to cut with the grain. Cutting a 2x4 lengthwise would be an example of ripping.
