You need to determine how tall the housing unit if for the window blinds. Typically, you want to mount it flush to the head of the window opening. Add the height of the housing unit to the opening height of the window, and that will provide you with your size.

To measure for vertical blinds, get a tape measure and measure the window opening from edge to edge. Then decide how much of an over hang you want on the outside of the window, typically one inch on each side. This will block light and still look appealing.

They don't go much above the window, maybe three inches, and they can go down as far as you like. Just measure the inside window size.

Measure the window horizontaly, then vertically, leaving at least an inch above the frame (for brackets) and give the measurements at least an inch to cover gaps .
