To measure vertical angles using a protractor, place the protractor's center hole over the angle vertex and align the protractor baseline with either of the two line segments forming the vertical angle pair. Because all vertical angles are congruent, the angle measure for one is sufficient for both.

First, we know that vertical angles are congruent by there definition. Therefore, we can label the vertical angles x. Each vertical angle shares two supplements, where these supplements are also vertical angles. We can label these vertical angles y. By the definition of supplementary angles, we then know that x+y=180degrees.
