A bright light transfers the image to a light sensitive, electrically conductive drum. This drum has an electrostatic charge that attracts toner powder to it proportional to the image. The drum then transfers the toner to the paper. The toner powder is bonded/melted to the paper by a heating element. Laser printers work similarly, acting as the bright light.

Photocopiers work by transferring the light and dark areas from an image on the platen to a drum which then attracts toner, or ink, allowing it to be transferred on to a blank page.
