Unless you want to record using a microphone, which will yield low quality results, you will need a special piece of hardware to get the LPs into digital. Any free audio recording software can handle the task though. Audacity is a free, simple, powerful program with plenty of support for new users.

To record sound onto your computer or IMAC, you will need to have a microphone or web camera that has a built-in microphone, or having a headset with a microphone will work as well. First of all you must go to Finder and search for "Voice recorder" once you find it, open it and it will enable you to record.

If you imac is less than 4 years old, they should have a microphone. Check the sounds area in preferences to ensure that the microphone is on.

These are two questions: Which hardware and which software to choose. If you don't have an audio input get IMic or an USB audio controller. Software: try toast/spindoctor or audacity.

You need to download special software, because I'm not sure whether your computer is properly installed the program. The best look at one of the popular search for something on this subject.

To record a sound on an IMAC computer, you should select the system preferences, and select sound. After that, you should be able to select the input.
