When the action was filed, you were notified of the court dates. That was the opportunity to appear and protest the action, the amount or to prove your circumstances preclude an ability to pay. Once the judgment is in place, you likely will not get any consideration.

Let's say that you have back child support. You could get this lowered by showing that you are unemployed or have had some other financial change in your situation. You may also get it lowered by showing that the other party is better able to pay the support or that you provide support in other ways (e. g. housing).

A judgement can be lowered by filing a appeal and winning that appeal or by a change in the information on which the information the judgement is predicated upon. For instance, if you are talking about a child support judgement, if your income changes either way, higher or lower, then the judgement can be adjusted accordingly.

I believe that the only way to get a judgment lowered is by negotiating that with the creditor. Once a new figure is determined then you would probably need to enter into a second, stipulated judgment with the creditor. That creditor can then file the judgment and strike the original one from the court file with the judge's permission.
