Bleaching or lifting the color of the hair is what causes damage. Darker colors are simply depositing color. The cuticle will be opened regardless, but only slightly unless bleaching.

Even though coloring (adding color) to your hair is not as damaging as lightening your hair (which removes color from your hair) if you over do it or if you fail to care for it properly by using products that help nurture it, your hair can become damaged from over processing.

You can damage hair and the scalp if the coloring is not done properly. The quality of the coloring agent is important to protect the hair from unnecessary damage. It is better to have it done by the professional who can also suggest products such as hair treatments and conditioners to keep the colored hair stay healthy and strong.
