For African American hair that tends to be more course I recommend Clairol Texture N' Tones Permanent Hair coloring, Cream of Nature Hair Coloring, and/or Dark N' Lovely Hair Coloring.

The best brown color for African American hair is anything that is conditioning and has some kind of highlights in it. Honey or carmel toned browns look nice on darker skin tones, as do browns with reddish or golden tints. Just don't go too light with your color and you should be able to find the right shade.
