A photocopied version of a death certificate will not hold up in the court of law. In order for a death certificate to be valid legally, you must obtain a copy from your local coroner's office, and can usually be requested in writing by using a simple form available in their office.

Of course you can always make an unofficial copy of a death certificate by using a regular photocopier or scanner. However, official sealed copies can only be acquired through official channels. To find out whether your state or province issues death certificates through city hall or through the hospital, simply contact city hall.

In some states you may be able to copy a death certificate but I know from personal experience you can't in Maryland. We were given 10 certificates and any extras wer $15.00 a piece. The funeral home or health department can guide you to where you can get extras.

It's entirely legal to copy death certificates. County offices where the deceased resided can provide these, and usually only ask for a self addressed stamped envelope. There are also services that will obtain copies of anyone's death certificates for a small fee.

You will need to do photo copies because you get just one issue per time or you can just order multiply copies from the Health Department $15 for first copy and $5 for each additional copy.
