Black plastic will not let sunlight or water through, usually resulting in prohibiting any growth, but sometimes mold will form underneath. Depending on the thickness, the plastic will be effective anywhere from 5 to 20 years. Using weed blocker is not always effective for more than a few years depending on the stated guarantee, but does allow water through.

Black plastic works as good as weed blocker. Weed blocker is more eco friendly. Black plastic will last longer than the weed blocker. As far as cost goes the black plastic is a little cheaper than your name brand weed blocker.

weed blocker tends to be a more favorable choice to your black plastic when landscaping on steep terrain as one has to account for errosion when on hillsides.

black plastic is cheap and easy to use but you have a problem with the stuff sliding of it also doesnt breath so if say you where using bark it would eventually rot where as weedblocker is a breathable mesh which lets the rain and damp through and also has a better grip

The black plastic will not let any weeds or vegetation through. The weed blocker does the job but not really as efficeintly as the black plastic does and wears out quicker.

Preen weed control fabric is a good choice, Preen also makes a mulch (Mulch Plus) with weedblocker in it. Weeds can also be controlled with vinegar applied directly to weeds.

Black plastic is generally not effective for blocking weeds. I would stick with a weed blocker. Black plastic tends to dry up very quickly which produces cracks. After this happens, weeds poke through the plastic with ease, interrupting your landscaping. This means you waste time laying the plastic and then when you have to pull the weeds.
